Dennis Butts is a partner in the the Strategic Healthcare Transformation team, and has more than 15 years of years of healthcare industry experience. Dennis has led numerous healthcare strategic planning engagements, and is a nationally recognized expert in the design, development, and implementation of clinical integration networks (CINs) for single hospitals, health systems, and academic medical centers. He is also highly experienced across the full spectrum of physician alignment vehicles and strategies to optimize hospital and physician partnerships to effectively position for value-based healthcare. In the arena of health system and service line strategies, Dennis assists healthcare senior leadership teams in the development of strategic plans and service line initiatives to enable health systems to appropriately respond to shifting market, competitor and regulatory demands.

Dennis has authored several articles on clinical integration networks in national publications, and serves as an Adjunct Professor in the University of Florida Healthcare Executive Education Program

Engagement highlights:

Clinical Integration

  • Led three health systems through a process to develop the legal structure, operating model, medical management structure and financial model for a Super CIN that would combine a Pioneer ACO and two other CINs into one super structure to advance population health efforts
  • Led steering and sub-committees at a 6-hospital health system to determine vision for clinical integration, determine the appropriate pace of change to pursue risk-based contracts and develop key program elements to successfully launch the CIN
  • Supported development of CI playbook to scale and prioritize CIN efforts across multiple geographies including common data analytics and infrastructure, care management solutions and short and long-term CI program objectives
  • Developed communication plan to effectively engage board, medical staff and employees regarding rationale, requirements and benefits of clinical integration

Physician Alignment and Strategy

  • Led development of 3-year strategic and operational plan for large multispecialty physician group to improve performance and properly position for payment reform
  • Developed two co-management agreements for an AMC in spine and solid organ transplant as a preliminary step toward greater degrees of accountability for performance
  • Led primary care network development strategy for 5-hospital system to increase access to health services in targeted geographies

Health System and Service Line Strategy

  • Led development of health system strategy to integrate two recently merged community hospitals into the overall system plan.  Plan included physician alignment, service line optimization and regionalization strategies, and the creation of narrow networks to optimize the system’s high quality and low cost position vis-à-vis the asset-heavy competition
  • Developed health system strategy for an AMC to determine best way to leverage current market position and feasibility of sustaining independence as a single-campus center serving 21-county market
  • Conducted feasibility study for health system to build its own inpatient rehab program to better manage care transition and further develop its post-acute strategy
