Johnny Zhang is an associate director in Guidehouse’s Global Investigations & Compliance practice in New York. Johnny has over 11 years of experience working at, and with, global financial institutions in the technology area. Johnny specializes in assessing the quality and governance of input data in transaction monitoring and sanctions screening systems. Besides leading data testing/validation efforts, Johnny is also experienced in Sanctions Screening system testing and gap remediation in compliance with New York State Department of Financial Services Part 504 regulatory requirements.
Prior to Guidehouse, Johnny was a senior data governance officer at HSBC North America. At HSBC, he conducted a number of data quality assessment projects on TM systems, such as Norkom and Mantas. He and his teammates performed various data quality tests, including data profiling and end-to-end data reconciliation, to determine the quality input data flows to the compliance systems and the data housed in them. As part of the exercise, Johnny also created and enhanced data lineage documentation to capture the flow of critical data element, also known as key data elements, throughout the business units and systems of the bank. At HSBC, Johnny was involved in subsequent efforts to uncover root causes of the data quality issues and to remediate them.
As a natural extension of his daily duties, Johnny also assisted with the build-out of the Global Chief Data Office and its group-level data governance program. In particular, he also made significant contributions towards the identification and definitions of CDEs at a global level across business units.
In the years leading up to his HSBC role, Johnny led a global business analyst team and provided engineering support at Credit Suisse USA’s Investment Banking IT division. At Credit Suisse, he and his team serviced the bank-wide Enterprise Messaging Middleware platform, based on IBM MQ Series, Tibco EMS, and other messaging technologies.
Having received his education in China, New Zealand, and United States, Johnny speaks English and Mandarin Chinese fluently. His tertiary education started at the School of Engineering at University of Auckland in New Zealand and was completed at Stony Brook University in New York. He graduated with Magna cum Laude honor in Computer Science.
