Increased Deployment of Renewable Gas Could Create 600,000 Direct Jobs in the EU

In a new analysis Guidehouse shows that scaling up renewable gases in the EU could create 1.7 to 2.4 million jobs by 2050, of which 600,000 to 850,000 would be direct jobs. Guidehouse prepared the study for Gas for Climate, an initiative of European gas transport companies and renewable gas associations who are committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the EU by 2050.

The investigated future renewable energy system would have significant benefits in creating employment opportunities, especially in rural areas. High-skill technical jobs are expected to emerge in sectors related to manufacturing, installation, and the operation of biomethane and green hydrogen plants, as well as in the renewable electricity generation sector to produce hydrogen. 

Another Gas for Climate study, released earlier this year, showed that using 2900 TWh or approximately 270 billion cubic metres (natural gas equivalent) of green hydrogen and renewable methane through existing gas infrastructure across the EU could save society €217 billion annually by 2050 compared to an energy system using a minimal amount of gas.
