Scaling Up Biomethane in Europe Can Accelerate the Energy Transition

Report examines the role biomethane can play in reaching EU climate targets

Biomethane is expected to contribute significantly to climate action in the European Union (EU). It is clear that a variety of solutions must be implemented in order to achieve the 2030 goals of the European Commission’s Fit for 55 package and the EU target to reach a net zero emissions economy by 2050. While the future energy mix is expected to be dominated by wind and solar power, biomethane can also play a role in the transition.

In collaboration with the Gas for Climate consortium, Guidehouse has published a report on the future role of biomethane in Europe. The report examines the scale-up potential of biomethane in Europe based on various studies and compares these with the European Commission’s own estimates. It also describes the benefits of biomethane to the energy system and climate and assesses the impact on rural employment. Finally, it provides strategies to scale-up biomethane and discusses how policy can remove market barriers.
