Measuring the Strength of Tesla’s New Electric Pickup

In a CNBC article, Guidehouse Insights discusses the fairness of a recent social media video comparing Tesla and Ford’s pickup trucks

A recent video tweeted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk shows the company’s forthcoming Cybertruck pulling a Ford F-150 uphill. The video, which implies the electric truck is better than Ford’s traditional pickup, initiated a response from the Ford X Vice President urging Testa to send over a Cybertruck so Ford could compare the vehicles in its own test.

In a CNBC article, Guidehouse Insights’ Sam Abuelsamid, principal research analyst, discussed Tesla’s social media stunt and the best ways to compare vehicles.

“Automakers do this kind of nonsense all the time, but Tesla takes it to the extreme,” Abuelsamid said.

If the contest between the two trucks ever became a reality, it would be better to compare Ford’s all electric F-150 prototype against the Tesla Cybertruck prototype. Abuelsamid also suggested, that both automakers should use towing tests by SAE International, which help set industry regulations and standards.

“There are other standardized metrics you can use for evaluating trucks that are standard for that market segment,” Abuelsamid said. But he added, given they’re prototypes, “it’s probably better to drop the whole thing. It’s irrelevant.”
