How a Louisiana Utility CEO is Prioritizing Worker Safety

Cleco CEO Bill Fontenot joins Public Utilities Fortnightly and Guidehouse to discuss how the organization prioritizes safety.

Infrastructure workers keep our country running and keeping them safe means making sure our lights stay on. One utility company stands out in its efforts to prioritize the safety of its employees. Cleco recently celebrated a record year in safety in 2023 as the leader across the board in safety performance reports for the Southeastern Electric Exchange.

In a recent publication of Public Utilities Fortnightly (PUF), Guidehouse’s Ted Walker and PUF sat down with Cleco CEO Bill Fontenot to discuss the organization’s safety record and how it is seizing opportunities born out of the global energy transition.

"Our most important accomplishment was our safety performance. 2023 was Cleco’s best safety performance record in the company’s 85+ year history."

Starting to 2016, Cleco began to invest in various additional safety programs, culture assessments, and changes. The utility only had one recordable injury last year, but they have continued to prioritize worker safety and aim to have zero this year.
