Talking Energy with Primary School Kids

What is energy? And what is green electricity? Two questions raised by children between the ages of 10 and 12 to Jeroen Scheepmaker at a primary school in the Netherlands. The teachers asked Jeroen to prepare a short lesson to answer these questions. First, by explaining what electricity is, then by diving into the different sources of power generation and the related impact on our planet.

The children demonstrated their own energy knowledge by showing they understood the difference between "grey" and "green" power and asking Jeroen, "Why do we still produce grey power?"

It was a simple question but difficult to answer. Based on this question, Jeroen showed the children how they can reduce their energy use in their homes and do what they can do to support the shift towards a sustainable energy supply.
