How Supercomputers Could Help Design the Pentagon's New Prototypes

The Department of Defense (DoD) manages some of the nation’s most powerful supercomputers. Simultaneously, academia, industries, and the government are exploring ways to rapidly advance manufacturing processes, dramatically shortening industrial timelines. 

In a C4ISRNET article, John Walker, managing director at Guidehouse, explains why utilizing a fast manufacturing process with supercomputers would allow millions of possible configurations to be reviewed, simulated, and tested at rapid speeds. 

“This approach enables a new, highly fluid form of design evolution. More than just co-located or connected assets, the approach is focused on accelerated experimentation, innovation, and rapid learning — all leading to faster cycle times and more resilient designs,” said Walker.

Traditionally, the DoD’s capability development process takes years to design and create. However, some in the organization are considering a new approach that would use high-performance computing, physics-based modeling, advanced manufacturing processes, and sensor emplacement to move from concept to design to build seamlessly and efficiently.

“Of course, there are complexities, and this solution certainly will not solve all the problems inherent in research and development processes but merging design, build and test into a seamless orchestration can accelerate development," said Walker.
