Coordinated Research and Innovation Critical to Speed Up the Energy Transition in Europe

In a report commissioned by ETIP SNET, Guidehouse maps the progress of European energy research and innovation on smart grids and sector coupling

Progress monitoring of European research and innovation is an essential activity to assess the progress towards a decarbonised energy system and to shape future R&I efforts accordingly. The European Technology & Innovation Platform Smart Networks for Energy Transition (ETIP SNET) aims to guide research, development, and innovation to support Europe’s energy transition.

A recently published report commissioned by ETIP SNET and prepared by Guidehouse, maps the state and trends in European energy infrastructure research and innovation. It shows that a significant amount of R&I effort has taken place in the areas of digitalisation; flexibility enablers and system flexibility; and consumer, prosumer, and citizen energy community. However, additional guidance in the areas of planning (holistic architectures and assets) and system economics is desirable. The report serves as the basis for the implementation of future R&I efforts in the field of energy infrastructure and the broader energy transition.
