Utility’s Role in Electricity’s Future – CFO Strategy Roundtable – Part I

During the latest executive roundtable discussion, Guidehouse and Public Utilities Fortnightly examine the strategy of three utility CFOs

Guidehouse and Public Utilities Fortnightly (PUF) recently sat down with the chief financial officers of Xcel Energy, Entergy, and Ameren to learn about the role strategy plays in their daily responsibilities, and how those strategies align with changing customer expectations, new technologies, and evolving business models.

During the conversation, PUF’s editor Steve Mitnick and Jan Vrins, managing director and leader of Guidehouse’s Energy, Sustainability, and Infrastructure segment, asked the CFOs about their long-term visions for their respective investor-owned utilities and how they plan to make those visions realities.

Answers from Xcel Energy’s Bob Frenzel, Entergy’s Drew Marsh, and Ameren’s Marty Lyons show that managing financial performance and reporting to shareholders is only a small part of the modern CFO’s job.

“They need to understand the impact and possibilities of new technology, changing policies and regulations, evolving customer needs, new products and services, changes in operations and security, and much more,” Vrins said. “Chief Need-To-Know-It-All is probably the best way to describe the new, broader, and enhanced CFO role and position.”

See what insights the execs had to share in this transcribed version of the discussion, which appears in the December issue of PUF. Stay tuned for the second part of the discussion, which will publish in January.
