Increasing Patient Financial Responsibility Especially Worries Rural Hospital Execs

HFMA and Guidehouse Survey Featured at HFMA ANI

Rural hospital finance executives have the greatest concern about the continued shift of financial responsibility onto patients, according to a recent HFMA and Guidehouse survey.

More than 90 percent of hospital and health system CFOs and revenue cycle executives believe that the increase in consumer responsibility will continue to affect their organizations. Concern about “significant” impacts was cited by 40 percent of all respondents and 58 percent of rural executives, which was almost twice the rate of urban hospital executives.

In response, providers are starting to implement more consumer-friendly means of making payments, with 93 percent of respondents offering an online payment portal and 63 percent offering cost-of-care estimation tools, according to an analysis by HFMA and Guidehouse.
